The W113 Pagoda is the one that broke six figures. The R107 ran from 1971 to 1989 and is still what most people mean when they say "classic SL" - removable hardtop, chrome, a V8 that does not ask much. The R129 is the first with a one-button electro-hydraulic soft top and a removable aluminium hardtop. More usable. More to go wrong. Still the cheaper ticket in most European ads. After that comes the R230: ABC suspension, more weight, less of the analogue feel. Different car.
Start with the chassis, not the star on the bonnet. Put R107 and R129 ads next to each other and decide whether you want a hardtop in the garage or a roof that puts itself away.
R107 if you want chrome, a separate hardtop, and the car people still photograph. R129 if you will drive it in bad weather and want the roof to look after itself. The Pagoda is a different budget. The R230 is newer and more complicated - ABC, not a first classic SL.
The engines are the easy part. Rust on an R107 and roof hydraulics plus early wiring on an R129 are what move the annual bill. A well-bought 500 in either generation costs less to keep than a cheap one that was ignored.
