The Marque That Invented the Automobile - and Never Stopped Defining It
Mercedes-Benz is not just a car manufacturer. It is, in the most literal sense, where motoring began. From Karl Benz's Patent-Motorwagen of 1886 to the Silver Arrows that dominated pre-war Grand Prix racing, from the post-war elegance of the 300SL Gullwing to the understated authority of the W126 S-Class, Mercedes has consistently set the standard by which luxury and engineering are measured.
For collectors, that heritage translates into an extraordinarily wide field. The W113 "Pagoda" - named for its distinctive concave hardtop - is one of the most recognisable classic cars on the road and a consistent strong performer at auction. The R107 SL (1971–1989) offers grand touring elegance at a fraction of Pagoda prices, making it one of the most accessible genuine Mercedes-Benz classics. The W123, produced from 1976 to 1985, is arguably the best-built sedan ever manufactured - a car so over-engineered that examples with 500,000 kilometres on the clock remain in daily use across four continents.
The collector spectrum
What sets Mercedes-Benz apart is the sheer range of entry points. At the top of the market, the 300SL Gullwing (W198) routinely exceeds €1 million. The Pagoda sits in the €80,000–200,000 range depending on variant and condition. The W123, W124, and W126 offer serious Mercedes-Benz pedigree from as little as €5,000 for a solid project to €30,000 for a concours-quality example. The youngtimer market - W201 (190E), W124 (E-Class), and the 500E - is accelerating rapidly, particularly among younger collectors who value the combination of Nineties build quality and analog driving character.
The European advantage
Germany is the heartland, and with good reason. More classic Mercedes-Benz models are listed in Germany than in any other European country - often with comprehensive documentation from the factory and a service history anchored to the German TÜV system. But Carseto opens
