The People's Car - From Wolfsburg to the World
No car manufacturer has a name more literally descriptive than Volkswagen - "the people's car." And no manufacturer has fulfilled that promise more completely. From the Beetle that became the best-selling single-model automobile in history to the Golf that redefined what an affordable car could be, Volkswagen has consistently built machines that transcended their price point. For classic car collectors, that democratising instinct is the draw: Volkswagen classics are among the most accessible, the most community-rich, and the most rewarding to own and work on.
The Beetle (Käfer) is the foundation. Ferdinand Porsche's air-cooled, rear-engined design entered production in 1945 and did not cease until 2003 - an extraordinary 58-year run across German, Brazilian, and Mexican factories. Early models - split-window (pre-1953) and oval-window (1953–1957) - are serious collector cars, with values exceeding €30,000 for good examples and considerably more for rare configurations. Later models remain among the most affordable and forgiving classic cars for first-time owners.
The Transporter (Type 2) is arguably Volkswagen's most culturally significant model after the Beetle. The split-screen T1 "Bus" (1950–1967) has become one of the most valuable mass-produced classic vehicles in the world, with Samba models - 23 windows, a canvas sunroof - exceeding €100,000. The T2 "Bay Window" (1967–1979) offers much of the same charm at a fraction of T1 prices and remains one of the most recognisable vehicles on any road.
The Karmann Ghia (1955–1974) is the elegant alternative: Beetle mechanicals wrapped in an Italian-designed body by Ghia, assembled by Karmann in Osnabrück. It has never been fast, but it has always been beautiful, and values have climbed accordingly. The Type 3 (Fastback, Squareback, Notchback) is the enthusiast's secret - the same air-cooled flat-four, but with a more modern body and a dedicated community.
